A Sunshine Coast company has won a lucrative three-year contract to provide water-bombing helicopters to the Rural Fire Service.
Under the $6 million contract, four helicopters will be called upon year-round to boost Queensland’s firefighting and rescue capability.
Contractor John McDermott says two of the choppers have a much larger capacity than the usual model and can carry more than 2,600 litres of water.
“The main base is down at Archerfield Airport but they’ll reposition them depending on the fire risk,” he said.
“So there’ll be times when they’re based at Cooroy, there’ll be times when they’re based at [the] Sunshine Coast, times when they’re based at [the] Gold Coast and potentially Bundaberg or Toowoomba or anywhere in between.
“So it’s an all of state contract – we could be sent anywhere.”
